Cabbage at Hit The North: Review

Cabbage funked up the O2 Academy for Hit The North 2018, spreading their neo post-punk, politically influenced legacy to a stacked room of lively fans. Despite the absence of one of their guitarists, the five-piece still managed to pull off their fuzzy, radical performance with ease. (As if wacky stage presence, fuzzy guitars and politically controversial lyrics was like second nature to them all.)

Opening the set with probably their most well-known song ‘Uber Capitalist Death Trade’, the band straight away got the audience bouncing around. Exotic, outrageous guitar riffs are plentiful throughout ‘Uber Capitalist Death Trade’; they totally mirror the dissonant, strident lyrics.

Followed by ‘Molotov Alcopop’, ‘Preach to The Converted’ and ‘Fickle’, the band’s clashing opinion continued to flow through every one of their songs. Cabbage’s sound honestly just consistently pumps you into an anarchist, disobedient mood. It’s really electrifying.

Ending the set with songs from the band’s 2016 EP, ‘Indispensible Pencil’ and ‘Necroflat in the Palace’, they left the stage with an audience wanting more.

Cabbage really have an overwhelming stage presence, which is really great to pick up on. It’s honestly like an instrument in itself. It always adds to the music when you see the people playing it enjoying what they’re doing.

Hit The North hosted some great bands this year and personally I think Cabbage were one of those few bands that really blow you away. Live performances from these guys are an experience and a half. They’re such a great band becuase of who they are, how they act, what they do, and how they’re influenced. The whole post-punk package.
